Storage Project

Our current 17.28 TB storage server has been a reliable workhorse, but it's no longer sufficient to meet our growing needs, we currently have 614.52 GB (3.47%) of free space. To ensure we can continue to deliver top-tier services and maintain the integrity of our data, we're seeking your support to upgrade to a new server equipped with four 24 TB drives in a RAID 6 configuration. This setup would give us 48 TB of usable space, with the ability to upgrade it to a total of 384 TB over time by simply adding more drives later, as well as give us more redundancy by allowing 2 drives to fail before loosing any data.

At this stage, it is critical to upgrade the storage as the average file is between 1½ GB and 2 GB each. if the current storage array decreases below 10 GB total this system will halt and no longer function. The temporary solution we have for this is doing weekly compressions to decrease file sizes, and ultimately removing less popular files, this is a last resort.

It is estimated that the server will run out of space in 4594 Years, 3 Months, 23 Days (Based on changes in the last 24 hours).

Why is this upgrade essential?

  • Expanded Capacity: The new server offers a substantial increase in storage space, ensuring we can handle our current demands and beyond.
  • Enhanced Reliability: RAID 6 provides data redundancy, safeguarding against data loss even if two drive fails, keeping operations seamless.
  • Future Growth: With sixteen drive bays, the new server is designed for scalability, allowing us to easily add more storage as our needs evolve.

Why does this upgrade cost so much?

  • Rising Cost: If we could've purchased this equipment 3 years ago, it would've only cost us $3,500. If that gives you an idea of what the prices of these individual components have went up.
  • Equipment: The Primary Storage Device with the drives we currently need to replace our current unit and allow us another 5 years+ of storage ($8,055) then we need new cables to hook them up ($91), and a new aggregarion switch to handle the larger load ($899)
  • Memory Surcharges: The manufacturers of the equipment are charging memory surcharges now due to the high demand and low supply of memory. $386 of the cost is from the surcharges.
  • Taxes: $663.38 is taxes
  • Shipping: $45.90 is shipping

Your contributions will directly support this critical upgrade, enabling us to secure a robust, reliable, and expandable infrastructure that meets today's demands and prepares us for tomorrow's challenges.

Thank you for helping us take this essential step forward!
